First venerated in a private home in Morelia, Mexico in the mid-twentieth century, the Holy Infant of Good Health (Santo Niño de la Salud) is a statue of the Christ Child regarded by many to be miraculous. The statue is eleven inches tall and is dressed with symbols of the power of Christ, wearing a royal mantle trimmed in ermine, a golden scepter in the left hand while the right is raised in blessing.
In 1944 the veneration of the statue was approved by Luis M. Altamirano y Bulnes, Archbishop of Morelia, and in the same year was solemnly crowned by pontifical command. On January 5, 1959, a replica of the Infant was presented to Blessed Pope John XXIII, the 261st Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Holy Infant of Good Health’s Feast Day is on April 21st. On that day, thousands of pilgrims from Mexico and the United States travel to Morelia to celebrate the glorious day. Nine days prior to the celebration, a novena is held in the Morelia cathedral which is concluded with a three mile parade from the cathedral to the Holy Infant Church with the statue carried on a decorated float.
The image is now located in a shrine built in his honor and dedicated in 1963 by the religious order of sisters, the Missionaries of the Holy Infant of Good Health. A replica of the statue is taken on pilgrimages throughout Mexico and the United States where it is greeted with enormous crowds and celebrations.
